**For this site, when we refer to “West Asheville”, we specifically mean Haywood Rd. (West of Patton Avenue) and any adjoining roads and streets. While the 28806 zip code does run down New Leicester Highway, the information page for New Leicester Highway can be found on our Leicester page.
If Asheville was New York, West Asheville would be its Brooklyn. The area is evolving organically as a hip, trendy enclave for young families and singles in search of fixer-upper homes, working artists, and entrepreneurs. It’s a bit bohemian, but in a charming sort of way that’s fueled by creativity and imagination. Old gas stations have found new life as trendy nightlife spots, and funky stores and shops abound in newly renovated buildings. Haywood Rd. tends to serve as West Asheville’s ‘main street’, and combines a diverse mix of fine and funky with a dash of youthful, vibrant energy.
This part of town was traditionally more affordable, but that’s quickly changing. The barbershops, furniture stores, and family owned businesses are being replaced with cafes and bakeries serving up organic foods, holistic practitioners, and a wide assortment of eclectic stores. West Asheville is also host to a great set of public parks and recreational activities. Carrier Park has the best off-leash dog park in Asheville (including a dog-friendly swimming area) and also features access to public volleyball and basketball courts, raft/canoe/kayak landing areas for floating the French Broad, and great picnic and hiking spots. Farther down the hill you’ll find the River Arts District with a wide range of cafes, studios, and galleries.
Who are your neighbors? Young 20’s to mid-40’s artists, blue-collar workers, students, and service-industry employees. Almost everyone is friendly and more than happy socialize over a cup of coffee or at any of the great dinner/nightlife spots up and down Haywood Rd.
